The Terry Richardson Dress

Let's take hipster apparel to a higher level...take the Terry Richardson dress, created by Hally McGhean. The NY actress and artist made the cut-up collage dress using pictures from the prolific photographer’s photoblog, TerrysDiary.com.

Terry Richardson has made a name for himself in the fashion world and is now a household name. This one-of-a-kind dress is an incredible tribute to the NYC photographer, who is now a favorite among celebrities and fans alike. The dress features shots from some of Terry’s most famous sets, like the July 2011 fresh-faced Ke$ha shoot.

You’ve got to admire this awesome handcrafted Terry Richardson dress. It would definitely have heads turning on the runway and on the street, and as a fan of TerrysDiary.com, I’d love to have one to call my own.

Nature Inspired Fashions

With all this Hurricane Irene talk, I felt inspired to do a post on hurricane inspired collections. Designers, apparently, have never had an inspiration that has come from a hurricane itself, so I am coming up with the next best thing here, give me a break ;) It’s no surprise that nature influences a number of high-profile fashion and jewelry designers; the environment and haute couture have a number of parallels.

Here are some of my favorite nature-inspired fashion (hey, a hurricane is a natural thing). Do you see where the inspirations of the designers below came from?

American Apparel Calls Curvy Ladies Everywhere!

American Apparel is on set to launch it's next big thing...a search for plus-size models! In its latest attempt to be controversial, turn heads, and meet its bottom line, a description from their website explains they need women with "junk" to model their newly available XL offerings:

"Calling curvy ladies everywhere! Our best-selling Disco Pant (and around 10 other sexy styles) are now available in size XL, for those of us who need a little extra wiggle room where it counts. We're looking for fresh faces (and curvaceous bods) to fill these babies out. If you think you've got what it takes to be the next XLent model, send us photos of you and your junk to back it up.

Just send us two recent photographs of yourself, one that clearly shows your face and one of your body. We'll select a winner to be flown out to our Los Angeles headquarters to star in your own bootylicious photoshoot. Runners up will win an enviable assortment of our favorite new styles in XL!

Show us what you're workin' with!"

It's peculiar that it took American Apparel this long to make items in XL sizes when their sales have suffered so badly for so long, and not to mention the average size of a woman in America is 12–14 (American Apparel's XL is a size 12–14 equivalent, the website says).

The plus-size market is such an obvious place to grab market share. So far, 325 submissions have been posted to AA's website, where you can rank entrants on a grade of one to five, five being the most "XLent." Too bad that, even if you win this model search, not only have you been complicit in all these bad puns, you have about as much chance of being the next big thing, figuratively speaking, as an America's Next Top Model winner.

Sketchers Is Being Sued Again

Skechers is back in legal hot water again — and this time it't with their own models, not for ripping off another company’s shoe. Why? You may ask, are models suing the brand? In an economy like this, should we look further? For not paying them as much money as it should have for appearing in one of the brand’s campaigns.

A group of 11 models accused Skechers of not paying them proportionally to how extensively their images were used to promote the brand. According to Women’s Wear Daily, Charles Davis, Angela Meng, Paisley McCollum, Daniel Liu, Chanel Celaya, Kathy Gardiner, Samantha Rex, Tracy Long Stover, Talesha Byrd, Sean Myrie and Marielle Jaffe all claim Skechers paid them for small-scale work and used the resulting images for large-scale marketing. And now they’re suing for $10 million in damages.

Lady Gaga’s ‘You And I’ Video

Lady Gaga was supposed to unveil the music video for her new single You And I on Thursday, but somehow it got leaked online today. The video was supposed to be sent out with a link on her 1000th tweet, but as of this posting, she’s at 996. We can only assume that it was leaked, but the Mother Monster seems to be taking in in stride.

Shortly before the video got taken down, she posted “FUCK THURSDAY” on her Facebook page. And you can believe, the clothes in the video were just as fierce as her attitude. She had a number of costume changes, from the chic all-black full cut coat and pants she paired with a Philip Treacy-esque hat to a really lifelike mermaid tail and gills. In between she wears everything from a slip to a t-shirt and jeans, and she even revisits her turquoise hair for a dance sequence in a barn.

Fashion's Night Out 2011

Fashion’s Night Out is only a little than less a month away, but I'm already prepping my schedule and feeling the exhaustion and excitement of Fashion Week hit me. So many stores! So many celebs! So little time!
Over the next few weeks, I’ll be helping you with your FNO choices. For now, let’s discuss the basics. Pretty much every store you can imagine is taking part in the Sept. 8 festivities. FNO swag is being sold leading up to the event, with 40% of the proceeds going to charity.

As per usual, a lot of the biggest events are going down in Midtown and on the Upper East Side (read: in and around Fifth and Madison Avenues). Bergdorf is having Michael Kors act as a window mannequin, while Oscar de la Renta signs books, and designers like Joseph Altuzarra take part in a runway show with their dogs. Tilda Swinton and Prabal Gurung will be setting up shop at Saks, and Rachel Zoe (and maybe Bono!) will be at Bloomingdale’s. Of course, there are a slew of downtown events, too. Olivier Theyskens will be holding court at Theory in Meatpacking, Marc Jacobs will be throwing carnivals in the West Village and Soho, and the Victoria’s Secret angels will be hanging out at the VS in the Financial District.
Oh, and the majority of stores haven’t even announced their events yet! Make sure to check back here for all sorts of details in the weeks to come, and take a peek at the FNO website while you’re at it.

Gwen Stefani May Miss Her Own Spring Runway Show

No doubt, scheduling must be really a difficult thing for celebrities, especially those with lots of creative impulses and not much time to follow them all. Case in point: Gwen Stefani, the No Doubt singer and designer behind a few clothing brands, might not show up to the runway show for her flagship label LAMB during New York Fashion Week next month.

Sad but true...Page Six reports that Stefani is simply too busy balancing the strenuous work of recording a new album with the old gang in Los Angeles — it’ll be No Doubt’s first record in 10 years — to devote any attention to the production of her show. If she is working really that hard on a new album, does she even have time to design these new clothes.. This may beg the question, “Who’s actually designing these clothes?” A rep for LAMB says Stefani is actually doing the work, but it seems to us she’s spreading herself too thin.

“Given the extraordinary demands of working on three fashion lines while also finishing a new record, it is hard to say whether she will be able to attend the actual presentation in New York next month.”

Lucille Ball's Classic Style

Whether it were a checker print or polka dot print, Lucille Ball’s fashion sense was as classy as her acts on the I Love Lucy show. This past Saturday, August 5th, was the 100th birthday of Ms. Lucille Ball. After reminiscing about her Vita-Meata-Vegamin skit and the famously known chocolate factory scene, swooning over her sophisticated style comes naturally. Always classic, the elements of her outfits seemed flawless nonetheless, wearing elements such as sheer fabrics, lace, and sweetheart necklines, it’s amazing how on trend these are at the moment.
